From the Principal

Dear Families,

October is a busy and exciting month at Washington! As we approach the end of the first quarter, this is a wonderful time to celebrate the hard work and growth our students have shown so far this school year. Parent-Teacher Conferences are just around the corner, and they provide an important opportunity to connect, reflect on your child’s progress, and partner together on their goals for the months ahead. We truly value the collaboration between home and school, and we look forward to these conversations. Thank you for your continued support in helping us make a strong start to the year!

October Social Emotional Focus

This month, students will be learn how to identify emotions in themselves and others, and apply strategies to manage their emotions through the Second Step program. Below are the skills students will be taught this month.

3rd Grade Goals

  • Explain the purpose of emotions

  • Identify differences between three gradations of the same emotion

  • Recall emotions have a purpose—emotions provide important information about what they may need

  • Name an emotion-management strategy, including: taking a break, slow breathing, and slow counting

    4th Grade Goals

  • Use helpful questions to think about new aspects of the situation

  • Identify new ways to think about situations that could help them feel better

  • Explain why it’s important to calm strong emotions

  • Describe the benefits of rethinking

    5th Grade Goals

  • Describe a recurring situation in which they typically feel a strong emotion

  • Recognize what they can and cannot change about recurring situations in which they typically feel strong emotions

  • Describe changes they will make to manage strong emotions the next time the situation occurs

October Learner Disposition Focus

This month, students will focus on self-regulation, and what it looks like while learning.

Students will be nominated for positive office referrals based on their growth or display of success criteria (information to the right).

Self-Regulation

Notes from Nurse Abril

  • Please do not send medications with your student to school. Students are not allowed to carry any kind of medication per board policy. A parent/legal guardian will need to bring it to the school and drop it off with the nurse.

  • If your student needs to take an antibiotic during school hours, please have the physician send a medication authorization form to the school. Without a medication authorization, I cannot administer the medication, and a parent/legal guardian will have to come administer it.

  • If you have any questions, please contact the school nurse via phone or email.
